The Orton-Gillingham Approach

Our Springfield Tutoring Academy Tutors are certified, trained or seeking certification and training in the Orton-Gillingham Method.

The Orton-Gillingham Approach to reading instruction was developed in the early-20th century. It is language-based, multisensory, structured, sequential, cumulative, cognitive, and flexible.

The Orton-Gillingham Approach has been in use since the 1930s. An intensive, sequential phonics-based system teaches the basics of word formation before whole meanings. The method accommodates and utilizes the three learning modalities, or pathways, through which people learn—visual, auditory and kinesthetic. Unlike some scripted and rigid reading programs, the Orton-Gillingham Approach is a system that allows for flexibility.

"The Competition"

One-To-One Instruction

The Springfield Tutoring Academy uses a unique system of one-to-one instruction. This type of instruction yields far greater results than small-group instruction offered by any of our competitors.

Group Instruction

All other learning centers and school-based programs use small-group instruction, where each instructor usually sees 3, 4, or even 5 children at one time!

Springfield Tutoring Academy

Will the instruction permanently solve weak academic skills and the underlying causes preventing my child from doing great in school?

The Springfield Tutoring Academy uses a unique system of one-to-one instruction that builds the academic skills necessary for long-term academic success.

While home-tutoring may be convenient, under most circumstances it will not solve the underlying problems causing your child to do poorly in school. Home-tutoring is a short-term fix

Will the instruction improve my child's concentration, focus, and study skills?

The Multi-Sensory Learning approach was first developed to help children with various attentional, behavioral, and learning problems. Research on students with ADD, ADHD, learning disabilities, and other problems related to concentration and focus revealed that student learn by a multisensory approach in different locations with different sets of materials maximized their academic performance and concentration dramatically!

NO SYSTEM IS IN PLACE TO IMPROVE A STUDENT'S FOCUS AND CONCENTRATION! Home-tutoring is limited to working on homework and current classroom assignments. Most families complain that home-tutoring is often very distracting for their child. The Springfield tutoring Center takes instruction to an entirely different level. Our dynamic learning approach involves physical processes that increase concentration, attention span, and focus. As your child's skills increase, academic skills and performance levels improve at a much greater rate possible than with any form of home-tutoring.

Why do many families who try home-tutoring come to The Springfield Tutoring Academy?

Frequently Asked Questions

How important is it to continue enrollment over the summer months? What about vacations?

Summer enrollment is a very important factor in your child's overall long-term success in our programs. Our research indicates that students who continue their sessions during the summer improve at a much faster rate than those who withdraw for summer vacation. We have compared students who stay and students who leave for the summer and have concluded that a leave of absence during the summer has a negative impact on your child's progress. If you need to take a week or two break for a vacation, we will definitely work around your schedule.

Why is One-To-One Instruction more effective than small group instruction?

Research indicates that One-To-One Instruction rapidly increases academic skills. The results of this empirical research indicate that One-To-One Instruction is superior to classroom, small group, or even one-on-one tutoring with your child's classroom teacher or home tutor. Your child will receive intense one-to-one instruction.

Why is my child having difficulty in school or not reaching their potential? We've tried everything!

The answer to that question varies from child to child, but we will have a better idea of why your child may be struggling or not reaching their potential after we have the results of the Diagnostic Assessment. Most children have difficulty in school because their academic skills are not at the level that they should be. Other children may have problems with concentration, confidence, study habits, motivation, or general test-taking skills. Regardless of why your child is having difficulty in school, The Springfield Tutoring Academy's intensive Reading, Math, and Writing Programs are individually designed to help your child achieve long-term academic success.

Can you help my child if he has ADD, ADHD, or other concentration problem?

YES! We are the only after-school learning center that has a unique system of delivery that helps children increase their concentration, attention span, and focus while strengthening their academic skills.
